Ingredients to make Macher Kalia

  • Rohu fish/Katla fish (Any portion) -5
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric Powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard oil- 2 tbsp
  • 2 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 3 medium size tomato grated
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 2 tbspn
  • Cumin powder - 1.5 tbspn
  • Coriander powder - 2 tbspn
  • Kasoori methi crushed by hand
  • Red chilli powder as per your requirement
  • Garam Masala powder
  • Water
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

How to make Macher Kalia

  1. Marinate the fish with salt and turmeric and keep aside for 10 minutes.
  2. In a pan, heat mustard oil and shallow fry the fish pieces till it turns brown.
  3. Remove the fish from pan and set aside.
  4. In the same pan, add little more oil and add the chopped onion.
  5. When the onions become a little sweaty add the ginger garluc paste. Mix well till the onion becomes golden.
  6. Now add the grated tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, crushed kasoori methi and mix well
  7. When the mixture starts releasing oil, sprinkle some water and stir.
  8. When the oil starts separating add water. When the water starts boiling add half tbspn garam masala powder and the fish pieces.
  9. Do not stir too much or else the fish pieces can break. When required consistency of the gravy is attended, remove the pan from flame.
  10. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and green chilli juliennes.
  11. Best to eat with rice.
