About Besan Halwa Recipe

Besan halwa is one of the easy make ahead desserts made with minimal ingredients lying in the kitchen. It is my mommy dear's recipe that I always cherish to make. During my childhood this was the one sweet I loved to eat.

Besan Halwa

Ingredients to make Besan Halwa

  • 1 cup besan
  • 1/2 cup Oil and ghee mixed together
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup hot Milk
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tbsp chopped and fried nuts of choice

How to make Besan Halwa

  1. Firstly heat up the milk and keep aside. Now in a non stick pan / kadai add the ghee and oil mix. Once it is warm, add the besan and start frying on medium flame.
  2. Check the consistency if its thick and hard to roast, add in a couple of tablespoons of oil or ghee to it. Just keep in mind that the mix has to be loose or else it will be difficult to roast.
  3. Keep stirring, roasting / frying until you get the subtle aroma of Besan. Roast perfectly for a perfect halwa.
  4. After a while, you will notice the mixture turning slightly little frothy on the top. This is the clear indication that it is roasted to perfection.
  5. Now simmer the flame to low and add the hot milk slowly. Keep stirring, it will splutter a bit so be careful. (If the milk has cooled a bit reheat it. Milk should be hot not warm).
  6. Mix it thoroughly, once mixed, add in the sugar, nuts and cardamom powder. Stir well and cook on medium flame until sugar is melted and well incorporated.
  7. Now leave it for a couple of minutes and later turn off the heat. The delicious and mouth melting Besan ka Halwa is all ready to serve. Make and enjoy.

My Tip:

Roast the besan on low to medium heat. Add enough oil and ghee mixture, this helps in roasting to perfection. If besan is not roasted well it will turn out gooey and slimy. Use hot milk, not warm milk as hot milk gets absorbed really well.
