A wholesome batter of dals and rice is fermented for 12 hours, the next day ingredients like spinach and onion are added, and cooked in an appe mould to make a tasty snack.

Ingredients Serving: 4
Bengal gram - 5 tablespoons
Arhar dal - 2 teaspoons
Split green gram - 1 teaspoon
rice - 1/4 cup
Chopped spinach - 1/2 cup
Finely chopped onions - 1/4 cup
Finely chopped green chilies - 4-5 no
salt to taste
curry leaves - 10
oil - 2 teaspoons
A pinch of asafoetida
Instructions
Combine daal and rice and soak for 12 hours .
Drain the water and blend to a smooth paste and ferment for another 12 hours.
Heat oil in a pan add onion, curry leaves, chilli, spinach, asafoetida and salt saute for 2 minutes.
Add this tempering to the batter and mix well. Put the batter in a steamer.
Cook till the lower surface becomes golden brown and then turn each Appe upside down using a fork so as to cook them from the other side using a little oil .
Garnish with grated coconut and serve immediately.
