ABOUT Modak RECIPE

Modak is a sweet dish which is prepared during Ganesh Utsav. It is a Maharashtrian dish.

Ingredients Serving: 12

  1. For the dough:
  2. All purpose flour (maida )- 2 cups
  3. Salt- 1/2 tsp
  4. Warm oil- 2 tsp
  5. Water to knead the dough
  6. For the filling:
  7. Grated jaggery- 1 and 1/2 cup
  8. Fresh desiccated coconut- 1 and 1/2 cup
  9. Roasted sesame seeds- 2 tbsp
  10. Cardamom Powder- 1 tsp
  11. Water- 1/2 cup
  12. Nutmeg powder- 1 tsp
  13. Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Sieve the flour with salt. Then pour in warm oil to the sieved flour.
  2. Next, add water to knead a smooth dough. Once the dough is kneaded, keep it covered for 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. Take the fresh desiccated coconut, jaggery , roasted sesame seeds, cardamom powder and nutmeg powder in a pan. Mix them properly. Cook this mixture on a medium flame.
  4. Stir it for about 10 minutes till the jaggery melts, the water dries up and the mixture is cooked and dry. Keep the mixture aside and let it cool. Make 10 to 12 portions of this dough.
  5. Take a portion of dough. With the rolling pin gently make thin rounds. Take a rolled dough circle on your palm, add 1 tbsp of the filling at the center.
  6. Start pinching the edges one by one. Bring all the pinched edges ends together and tap the centrer. Similarly make all the other modaks.
  7. Heat the oil and deep fry the modaks on a medium flame.
  8. Serve them warm.
