ABOUT Gramathu Idli/Village Idli- A Healthy dish from Millets RECIPE

Gramathu idli is a recipe which i prepared using 3 millets such as Varagu(Kodo Millet), Samai (Little Millet), Thinai (Foxtail Millet). First we need to know what are millets and what are the beneficial uses. Millets are a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. Kodo Millet (Varagu) - 200 gm
  2. Little Millet (Samai) - 200 gm
  3. Foxtail Millet (Thinai) - 200 gm
  4. Idli rice - 200 gm
  5. Urad dhal - 200gm

Instructions

  1. Wash all the millets and Idli rice well and soak together in a large vessel for 6 hours.
  2. Wash the Urad dhal separately and soak for only 2 hours.
  3. Using Wet Grinder grind the soaked millets first into a smooth batter.
  4. Then grind the Urad dhal and mix the 2 batters together.
  5. Add salt and using the hand mix well and allow to ferment for overnight 10 hours.
  6. Then next day the fermented batter should risen up.
  7. Normally i make idlis using a white cloth kept in idli plates. Those who do not use cloth can grease some oil in moulds.
  8. Now pour a batter in idli moulds and allow to steam for 10 minutes.
  9. Once done, remove the pluffy idlis from idli pot and serve hot.
  10. This unique and tasty Gramathu idli can be served hot with coconut chutney, karivepillai chutney,red chilli chutney and sambar.
