About Til ka khatta Recipe

This is one of the side dishes that always accompanies a Hyderabadi Khichdi. Everyone loves to have atleast one of the dishes to be tangy in Hyderabad and Telangana regions.

Til ka khatta

Ingredients to make Til ka khatta

  • Marble sized tamarind - soaked (with thick juice extracted)
  • Water to dilute the tamarind extract
  • salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoons of roasted sesame seeds (powdered)
  • 1 small sized onion - diced
  • oil for tempering
  • 1 sprig of curry leaves
  • 3 dried red chillies
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • A pinch of turmeric powder.

How to make Til ka khatta

  1. Mix together the tamarind extract, water, sesame seeds powder, salt. Stir it well together.
  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add in cumin seeds and fry for 5 seconds. Then add curry leaves followed by dry red chillies. Fry for another 5 seconds.
  3. Next, add in onion and fry till they turn translucent in colour. Add in turmeric powder and continue stirring.
  4. Finally add the diluted tamarind extract. Boil for 2-3 minutes and switch off the gas.
  5. Serve warm as a side for khichdi for best taste.

My Tip:

Ginger-garlic paste and onions are optional ingredients. They can be added for an enhanced flavor. Chopped mint leaves, coriander leaves can be used to garnish.
