Black urad dal

Ingredients to make Black urad dal

  • 200 grams black split urad dal
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 4 cups of water
  • Tadka ingredients:
  • 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger, freshly grated
  • 2 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asofoetida
  • 2 tbsp ghee

How to make Black urad dal

  1. Wash the dal thoroughly, then soak it in 4 cups of water for 30 minutes or more.
  2. Rinse the water out and wash the dal again. Take a pressure cooker, add in the dal with 4 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
  3. Close the lid of the cooker and cook it on a medium flame. Within 8-10 minutes, the cooker will start steaming, then you can turn the heat to low and cook for another 4-5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, take a pan, add the ghee and cook the tadka ingredients together for 2-3 minutes. Then keep it aside.
  5. Add the tadka into the dal and cook it on a low flame for 5-6 minutes while stirring continuously. You can add a cup of warm water or more to achieve the desired consistency.
  6. Transfer the dal in a serving bowl and serve it with hot rotis.
