Poha tamarind rice

Ingredients to make Poha tamarind rice

  • Poha/aval/flattened rice -1 cup
  • turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  • tamarind paste -1 tsp
  • salt as needed
  • oil - 2 tsp
  • mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • asafoetida/hing - a generous pinch
  • Bengal gram dal/kadalai paruppu - 2 tsp
  • Red chillies -2
  • green chillies -1
  • ginger
  • Roasted peanuts -2-3 tbsp
  • curry leaves - few

How to make Poha tamarind rice

  1. Wash aval/poha twice and drain the water completely. Add turmeric powder, thick tamarind extract (very less) or tamarind paste, little salt and mix it well. Keep it aside. In the meantime we will prepare the seasoning.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add hing, channa dal, red chillies, green chillies, peanuts, salt needed and curry leaves.
  3. When dal turns golden brown, fluff poha and add to it. Mix well, check for salt and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Switch off the flame and serve with potato chips or papads or vadams.
