Ingredients to make IDLI POPU - idli grain upma

  • Idlis - 8 or more
  • Mustard - 1/2 tsp
  • Jeera - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal - 3 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  • Red chilly - 1
  • Green chilly finely chopped diagonally - 2

How to make IDLI POPU - idli grain upma

  1. Keep aside idlis made out of rice rava. In case they are warm, refrigerate them.
  2. Make a coarse grainy mix by rubbing each idli against your fingers. Add 1 1/4 tsp salt and uniformly mix .
  3. In a nonstick pan, add 2 sp oil. Make seasoning of mustard seeds, jeera, urad dal, curry leaves and red chillies.
  4. Add the shredded idli grains and toss it for about 5 minutes.
  5. Serve hot.
My Tip: Idlis made out of rice rava have the grainy texture and are ideal for this recipe. Idlis made out of grinding rice may not be suitable as it turns soggy. For the latter, idli could be cut into cubes instead of making them grainy.
