Very tasty and popular recipe from Kanpur but my grandmother's Speciality

Fara

Ingredients to make Fara

  • Soaked chana daal 1/2 cup
  • Whole wheat flour 1 cup
  • salt to taste
  • turmeric powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1 tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Kitchen king masala 1 tsp
  • Garam masala 1/2 tsp
  • cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
  • asafoetida 1/2 tsp
  • Carom seeds 1/2 tsp
  • Raw mango powder 1/2 tsp
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • onion Slices 1 Medium
  • oil 1/4 cup

How to make Fara

  1. ADD 1/2 CUP SOAKED CHANA DAL (BENGAL GRAM) IN A GRINDER, BLEND INTO A COARSE PASTE
  2. HEAT 1 TSP OIL, ADD 1/2 TSP EACH OF ASAFOETIDA & CUMIN SEEDS
  3. ADD THE GROUND DAL PASTE
  4. ADD 1/2 TSP EACH OF TURMERIC & CORIANDER POWDERS
  5. ADD 1/2 TSP RED CHILLI POWDER, 1/2 TSP GARAM MASALA, STIR & COOK FOR 1-2 MINS, TAKE OFF HEAT
  6. ADD 1/2 TSP SALT
  7. TAKE 1 CUP WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, ADD 1/2 TSP EACH OF CAROM SEEDS, SALT, KNEAD INTO A DOUGH
  8. LEAVE TO REST FOR 5 MINS
  9. ROLL OUT A SMALL BALL OF DOUGH INTO A POORI
  10. PLACE SOME READY DAL MIX IN THE CENTRE, FOLD & SEAL THE EDGES LIKE THIS
  11. COOK IN BOILING HOT WATER FOR 5-7 MINS, STIRRING GENTLY ONCE IN BETWEEN
  12. TAKE OFF HEAT WHEN DONE, COOL FOR 4-5 MINS
  13. CUT INTO SMALL PIECES
  14. THE FARAS ARE READY
  15. HEAT 2 TBSP OIL, ADD 1 TSP MUSTARD SEEDS
  16. ADD 1 SLICED ONION, SAUTE FOR 2 MINS
  17. ADD 1/2 TSP TURMERIC POWDER
  18. ADD 1/2 TSP CORIANDER POWDER, 1 TSP KITCHEN KING MASALA, 1/2 TSP EACH OF AMCHUR & RED CHILLI POWDERS
  19. MIX WELL & ADD THE FARAS
  20. ADD SALT TO TASTE, FRY FOR 3-4 MINS
  21. TAKE OFF HEAT, GARNISH WITH FRESH CORIANDER LEAVES, SERVE HOT
