ABOUT Misal Pav RECIPE

A much-loved Maharashtrian curry that is a fiery melange of potatoes, freshly made spice paste and sprouted beans. Goes best with pav, it is usually served at the breakfast table but also makes for a light meal in itself.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. To make paste for gravy/sauce:
  2. 2 tbsp Oil
  3. 2 tbsp Oil
  4. 1 tsp Garlic paste
  5. 1 cup chopped onion
  6. 1 cup chopped tomato
  7. 3/4 cup grated coconut
  8. To make usal:
  9. 3 tbsp oil
  10. 1 tsp garlic paste
  11. 1 tsp Ginger paste
  12. 1/2 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  13. 1 1/2 cups steamed matki (moth) soaked overnight
  14. 1 cup boiled potato (cut into square pieces)
  15. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  16. 1 tsp garam masala
  17. 1/2 tsp cinnamon-clove powder
  18. 1 lime juice
  19. 3 cups water (or as required) Salt to taste
  20. For Garnishing:
  21. Chopped onion
  22. Mix dry farsan
  23. Chopped coriander To serve with: Paav

Instructions

  1. To make paste : Heat oil in a pan. Add ginger paste, garlic paste and chopped onion.Saute till the onion is transculent.
  2. Then add chopped tomatoes and grated coconut. Mix well and saute it for few minutes.Allow the mixture to cool.Grind it into smooth paste.
  3. To make Usal: Heat oil in a pan. Add ginger paste, garlic paste and asafoetida.Saute it for a minute.Then add soaked & boiled sprouts and potatoes. Mix it.
  4. Then add salt, turmeric powder, garam masala, clove-cinnamon powder and lime juice.Add water to it.Cook it for 8-10 minutes.Transfer it in a separate bowl.
  5. To make Misal: Take a serving bowl. First pour ready usal in the bowl. Then pour the red gravy over it. add finely chopped onion, farsan to the mixture.Garnish it with chopped coriander. Serve it with pav n a slice of lemon
