ABOUT Basbousa RECIPE

Basbousa is a native Egyptian and traditional Middle Eastern sweet cake.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 1 cup fresh coconut
  2. 1 cup semolina/suji
  3. 1 cup all purpose flour/maida
  4. 1 cup lukewarm milk
  5. 1 cup curd
  6. 3/4 cup sugar
  7. 1/4 cup butter
  8. 1/2 tsp baking soda
  9. 1/2 tsp baking powder
  10. Chopped pistachios or almonds
  11. For sugar syrup:
  12. 1/2 cup sugar
  13. 1/2 cup water
  14. Orange zest or essence

Instructions

  1. In a bowl mix semolina, maida and grated fresh coconut. Add baking powder and soda.
  2. In another bowl mix sugar with lukewarm milk then add curd and butter.
  3. Mix liquid mixture in the dry mixture. Basbousa batter is ready
  4. Grease a baking tin then pour batter in the tin.
  5. Preheat the oven at 175 degree centigrade. Bake it for 20 to 30 minutes or till it is baked perfectly.
  6. Check with the help of a knife. When the knife or toothpick inserted in the center of batter and comes out clean then it will be baked.
  7. For the sugar syrup: In a pan mix sugar and water on a medium flame. (No need for string consistency) Just boil sugar and water for 5 minutes.
  8. Add in the orange zest or essence, sugar syrup is ready.
  9. When basbousa cake is still hot after being perfectly baked, pour the sugar syrup on it.
  10. Garnish with chopped pistachio or almonds.
