  • 6-7 red chillies
  • 1 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • tamarind small lemon size
  • 2 green chillis
  • 5-6 curry leaves

  • curry leaves a few

How to make Gojjambode - (Authentic Udupi Dish)

  1. Soak urad dal for 2 hours. Grind dal with green chilli and a few curry leaves. Add very little water while grinding. Make a thick paste.
  2. Put in a little salt and mix well. Keep aside for 15 minutes.
  3. In a mixie jar, put grated coconut, mustard, tamarind and red chillies. Grind to a smooth paste.
  4. Heat a pan, add the paste and add 1 litre water. Put salt as per taste and sugar. Mix well, let it boil for 5 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a pan, fry the vadas till light brown.
  6. Dip these vadas in water for a minute, squeeze out the water lightly.
  7. Put these vadas in the prepared gojju (curry). Let these vadas soak in gojju for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Heat 1 tsp oil season with mustard and curry leaves. Pour on the prepared Gojjambode as a garnish.

My Tip:

Grind a thick dough. Since vada also contains salt, do not put more salt in gravy/goju. Do not re-heat the gravy after putting the vadas. It can be served chilled or room temperature.
