Bihari Fish Curry

Ingredients to make Bihari Fish Curry

  • Fish- washed and cut into pieces
  • Marinade - 2 tsp turmeric powder, 2tsp red chili, powder, 2 tsp mustard oil, 3tsp ginger garlic paste, green chili paste, a pinch of salt.
  • 1.5 cups of mustard oil
  • For gravy - paste of 1 onion and 3 tsp yellow mustard seeds, 2 tsp coriander seeds, green chili, 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • Masala for gravy-turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder 1/2 tsp each
  • 1 bay leaf, 2 dry red chili , and whole 5 Thai red chili, 2 tomatoes cut in big quarters
  • Coriander leaves and lemon wedges. salt as per taste

How to make Bihari Fish Curry

  1. Marinade the cut washed fish with turmeric, red chili, tsp oil, ginger garlic and green chili paste.
  2. In a wok add sufficient oil for deep frying. Heat on medium flame. Add the fish in the wok. Keep flipping using tongs for cooking the fish evenly on all the sides.
  3. In the same wok add the bay leaf, red dry chili, ( onion, mustard, coriander seeds)paste along with ( ginger garlic and green chili ) paste and salt to taste. Fry on medium flame till you see the oil separating. Add the tomato chunks.
  4. Add Masala ( turmeric, red chilli, corriander powder, black pepper ) and add coriander leaves, fry it
  5. Add water and bring the gravy to a boil, add the fish and boil once and switch off the stove.
  6. Serve with hot steamed rice and lemon wedges

My Tip:

Always make your own ginger garlic paste pre-soak the mustard and coriander seeds in water and then grind. cook all the masala making sure it does not burn, a pungent mustard seed never goes well with burned masala. while frying fish make minimum possible flips.
