Ingredients to make Tomato pappu/ dal

  • Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  • Chopped tomatoes - 2
  • Garlic cloves - 6-7
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Dry red chillies - 2
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Jeera seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 10-12
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee/ refined oil
  • Salt as per taste

How to make Tomato pappu/ dal

  1. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked toor dal, chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder along with green chillies and half the garlic cloves crushed.
  2. Boil the the dal and mash it with the help of a masher.
  3. To make the tadka, heat ghee/ refined oil. Add the mustard seeds, jeera seeds, dry red chillies followed by curry leaves and then rest of the garlic cloves chopped.
  4. Once they splutter and color, add the tadka to the boiled dal.
  5. Pour some more water, salt and red chilli powder into the Dal. Cook till it reaches required consistency. Add some more ghee and serve.
