Gilka daal

Ingredients to make Gilka daal

  • 250 gram sponge gourd ( gilka)
  • 1 cup yellow moong daal
  • 2 medium sized tomato
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 tsp Garlic paste
  • 2 tsp ginger chilly paste
  • 1 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of Asafoetida
  • 1tsp garam masalA
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 spring curry leaves

How to make Gilka daal

  1. Soak the daal for 30 minutes by washing twice and keep aside
  2. Meantime cut the tomatoes and onions and peel off sponge gourd and cit it into desired size pieces and keep aside
  3. After 30 minutes heat a pressure cooker and add oil in it
  4. Add mustard seeds cumin seeds ,asafoetida, curry leaves ,and onion and salute till onion become translucent
  5. Add ginger chilly paste and garlic paste,red chilly powder and turmeric powder, then add tomatoes and cook till oil leaves
  6. Add salt and garam masala and then sponge gourd
  7. Mix it properly and then add soaked daal in it
  8. Add water as we normally add in our regular daal (according to your choice of thickness)
  9. Close the lid of cooker and cook upto 2 whistles
  10. When pressure release naturally ,open the lid serve hot with rice and fulka
