Ingredients to make chana dal pulao

  • 1 glass basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup chana dal soaked & drained
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp ghee/ oil
  • 1 Stick cinnamon
  • 3-4 cloves
  • 4-5 peppercorns
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 1 bay leaf
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 green chillies sliced or finely chopped
  • 1 tsp thinly sliced ginger
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp kitchen king masala
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder ( optional)
  • 2 glass water
  • salt to taste

How to make chana dal pulao

  1. Heat a pressure cooker and add chana dal in it. Cook it till the cooker releases 1 whistle as we want to cook the dal only half. Once done, switch off the flame and keep it aside.
  2. Heat oil in a wide pan, add bay leaf, cumin seeds, cinnamon, black peppercorns, back cardamom and asafoetida. saute it for about half minute.
  3. After 30 seconds, add green chilies and thinly sliced ginger and cook them until the ginger is cooked very well.
  4. Next quickly stir in turmeric, salt, black pepper powder, kitchen king masala.
  5. Finally add soaked rice, dal and water. Increase the heat to high.
  6. When a boil comes, reduce the heat to medium low and cover it the pan. Let the khichdi cook for 10 minutes or whole of the water dries up.
  7. Drizzle some hot ghee & serve hot with raita or curd.
