Punjabi mix dal (Ma cholyan dal)

Ingredients to make Punjabi mix dal (Ma cholyan dal)

  • 1 cup chana dal (bengal gram split )
  • 1/2 cup urad dal (black gram skinned )
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • For tempering - 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 small tomato finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove finely chopped
  • 1 green chilli finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 dry red chilli whole
  • 2 tbsp oil /clarified butter

How to make Punjabi mix dal (Ma cholyan dal)

  1. First soak the chana dal and urad dal separately for about 15 - 20 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add 2 cups of water and chana dal. Add salt and turmeric powder. Cook until 2 whistles and turn off the gas. Let it cool.
  3. Add soaked urad dal into the boiled chana dal, cook until 2 whistles.
  4. For tempering - take a pan, add oil or clarified butter into it. Once the oil begins to get hot, add cumin seeds and whole red chillies.
  5. When the cumin seeds start to crackle, add chopped garlic and saute for 3 - 4 minutes.
  6. Add chopped onion, saute it until onion becomes translucent. Now add green chilli and tomato into it.
  7. Cook until the tomato becomes tender or soft. Add red chilli powder, saute it and turn off the gas.
  8. Pour this tempering on the dal and the mix dal is ready.
