About Grandmama's Puli Milagu Meen (Fish) Recipe

Being a Keralite, sea food is regularly part of my lunch. My Grandma, her sister's, my mom are very proficient in cooking this traditional puli milaguitu meen. Oh I love the way my grandmother cooks it. She perhaps has the midas touch however I love its taste. Sharing her recipe here

Grandmama's Puli Milagu Meen (Fish)

Ingredients to make Grandmama's Puli Milagu Meen (Fish)

  • 1/2 kg sea fish
  • 3-4 kudam puli (cocum)
  • 1 cup water+ 4 tbsp warm water
  • 7-8 shallots (pearl onion) chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 to 2.5 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1.5 tbsp crushed garlic
  • 1.5 tbsp crushed ginger
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2-3 sprig curry leaves
  • salt as per taste
  • 3.5 tbsp coconut oil
  • Earthen vessels for cooking

How to make Grandmama's Puli Milagu Meen (Fish)

  1. SOAK KUDAM PULI IN WARM WATER FOR 20 MINUTES
  2. GRIND GINGER GARLIC TO PASTE
  3. HEAT 2.5 TBSP COCONUT OIL, ADD MUSTARD SEEDS AND ALLOW TO SPLUTTER
  4. ADD FENUGREEK SEEDS AND ALLOW TO TURN GOLDEN BROWN
  5. ADD GINGER GARLIC PASTE AND SHALLOTS
  6. ADD CURRY LEAVES. SAUTE UNTIL ONIONS STARTS BROWNING
  7. ADD TURMERIC AND RED CHILI POWDER. MIX WELL
  8. ADD KUDAM PULI WATER TO THE ONION MIXTURE
  9. ADD SALT AND WATER. MIX WELL
  10. ADD 1 KUDAM PULI TO THE GRAVY. BRING IT TO BOIL
  11. ADD FISH TO THE GRAVY
  12. COVER AND COOK FOR 20 MINUTES ON LOW HEAT
  13. ADD 1 TBSP COCONUT OIL AND GARNISH WITH CURRY LEAVES
  14. SERVE HOT WITH RICE
