Ingredients to make Gujrati dal

  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 cup toovar dal
  • 2 tbsp peanuts
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds(rai)
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds(jeera)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 6 to 8 curry leaves
  • 1 small pc of cinammon stick(dalchini)
  • 2 to 3 pcs of cloves(long)
  • 1 bay leaf(tej patta)
  • 1/4 tsp hing
  • fresh green coriander for garnish
  • 2 to 3 round small dried red chilly
  • 4 to 5 kokam soaked in water
  • 1/4 cup tomatoes finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp jaggery(gud)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Grated ginger
  • 2 green chilly slitted
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

How to make Gujrati dal

  1. Wash the dal, and soak for half an hour, add 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.
  2. Let the pressure cooker cool down and then open it.
  3. Heat oil and ghee together in a deep pan, add jeera and mustard seeds.
  4. When the seeds crackle - add hing ,curry leaves, clove ,cinnamon, bay leaf, chillies, and sauté on medium flame.
  5. Add tomatoes, turmeric powder ,green chilly ,kokum and salt.
  6. Now add ginger, lemon juice, jaggery and half cup water.
  7. Once the water starts to boil, add peanuts in it, let it boil for a minute, then add cooked dal and let it simmer for 15 minutes, stirring continuously.
  8. Garnish with green fresh coriander and serve hot.

My Tip:

This dal tastes best with jeera rice
