About Khatti Meethi Chana Dal (Desi Style) Recipe

It is Northern style traditional chana dal that I have learnt from my elders. Very different flavour and different dish but the taste is good.

Khatti Meethi Chana Dal (Desi Style)

Ingredients to make Khatti Meethi Chana Dal (Desi Style)

  • 400 gms chana dal soaked for 2 hours
  • 2 bay leaves, 1 strip cinnamon stick,1 black cardamom, 3-4cloves, 4-5whole black pepper
  • 1 tsp ginger,1 tsp garlic paste
  • 3 medium sized onion julien,1 or 2 fresh red chilli
  • 1 tsp coriander, 1 and 1/2 tsp red chilli and 1/2 tsp turmeric and 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp tamarind paste (thick), 1 and 1/2 tsp jaggery
  • salt to taste and 1/2 cup of musterd oil for cooking
  • for tempering: desi ghee, few julien onion and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • fresh coriander leaves for garnish

How to make Khatti Meethi Chana Dal (Desi Style)

  1. Properly heat mustard oil in pan, add all whole masala in it. When smell of whole masala comes in oil, add chana dal, ginger, garlic paste, julienne onion, coriander, red chilli, turmeric, cumin powder and salt mix in it.
  2. Add required water to cook (add water gradually, if needed)
  3. Before the dal is completely cooked, add tamarind, jaggery and fresh red chilli and cook till its flavour comes in the dish. Finally, add all spice masala in it and turn off the stove.
  4. For tempering, heat desi ghee in pan, add cumin seed and onion and let the onion turn brown. Add the tempering to the dal.
  5. Garnish with coriander. Serve the dal hot with rotis.
