Steamed Hilsa

Ingredients to make Steamed Hilsa

  • 1/2 kilogram Hilsa (ilish) fish
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2-3 green chillies
  • 1 inch piece Ginger
  • 3 tablespoon Mustard oil

How to make Steamed Hilsa

  1. Sprinkle salt and half of the turmeric powder on top of the fish slices.
  2. Make a smooth paste of yellow mustard seeds, black mustard seeds, green chillies, ginger, salt & remaining turmeric powder.
  3. Take a pan and place the fish in it and place the pan on the ring in the pressure cooker.
  4. Spread the paste equally on fish.
  5. Pour mustard oil on top.
  6. Place ring in the pressure cooker.
  7. Pour three cups of water into the cooker and place the pan with the fish on the ring.
  8. Cover with lid and steam the fish for ten minutes.
  9. It's ready to serve.

My Tip:

The paste of yellow mustard seeds has to be smoother. Add 1 tablespoon of tamarind water and before you paste all the ingredients, dress the fish pieces with lemon and keep in vinegar water for 5 minutes. Before covering the lid, sprinkle 1 tbsp of sugar on the top.
