Ingredients to make Lau Patay Ilish Bhapa or Steamed Hilsha Wrapped in Gourd Leaves

  • mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • khaskhas seeds 1 tsp
  • green chilies 7-8
  • mustard oil as required
  • salt as per taste
  • gourd leaves and thread to tie
  • turmeric - 1/2 tsp

How to make Lau Patay Ilish Bhapa or Steamed Hilsha Wrapped in Gourd Leaves

  1. Make a paste of mustard seeds, khaskhas and green chilies. Now marinate the fish with this paste, salt, haldi powder and mustard oil. keep it for 15 mins. Now take 1 leaf, place a piece of fish some marination and a green chilli.
  2. Then drizzle some mustard oil and wrap the leaf and tie it with a thread. prepare all the pieces like this. Then in a steamer or in a pressure cooker or simply boil water in a kadai and place a airtight tiffin box in the kadai.
  3. Put a weight over the box and cover the kadai. cook on low flame for 10 - 15 min. Serve with steamed rice.

My Tip:

Always use mustard oil for this recipe for the pungent smell.
