Bele saru/ Toor dal sambar

Ingredients to make Bele saru/ Toor dal sambar

  • To pressure cook:
  • 1/2 Cup Toor dal
  • 4 medium onions
  • 4 medium tomatoes
  • Vegetables (carrot, beans)
  • For Tempering:
  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • Mustard
  • 6 garlic pods
  • curry leaves
  • Finely chopped onions
  • For spice mixture:
  • Water
  • 3 tablespoon sambar powder
  • Handful of coriander
  • Salt
  • Tamarind pulp

How to make Bele saru/ Toor dal sambar

  1. On one side.... Cut the onions, tomatoes, carrot, beans and place it in a cooker. Add toor dal, sufficient water to pressure cook it. Cook it for 4 to 5 whistle. Allow it to cool.
  2. On the other side.... In a vessel add sambar powder, finely chopped coriander leaves, enough water to boil and put it on flame. Cook for 15 minutes. (By the time pressure cooker whistles n cool this spice mix will be ready).
  3. Once the cooker is cooled, open the lid. Dal will be boiled nicely (if not mash it a little).
  4. Add this dal mixture to the spice mix and boil for 5 minutes.
  5. Add in salt, tamarind pulp. Mix well and boil for 5 more minutes. Check for the seasoning. Turn off the flame.
  6. In a small pan, add ingredients in same order under section "for tempering" and add it to the sambar.
  7. Now bele saru (toor dal veggie sambar) is ready.
My Tip: U can add ONLY radish/ ere kai/ drumstick/ mangalore cucumber for the veggies. Carrot n beans goes well.
