Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 1/4 cup Chana dal (Split Bengal gram)
  2. 1/4 cup toovar dal (arhar dal)
  3. 2 tbsp green gram
  4. 1 tbsp urad dal
  5. 1/4 cup raw rice
  6. 1/4 cup parboiled rice
  7. Salt
  8. Pinch soda
  9. oil for frying appe
  10. for tempering-
  11. 1 tsp oil
  12. 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  13. 1/4 Tsp Asafoetida
  14. FOR STUFFING-
  15. 2 cube process cheese grated
  16. 2 tbsp green chutney

Instructions

  1. combine all the pulses, rice and enough water in a deep bowl. keep aside to soak for 10-12 hours
  2. drain and blend in a mixer to a coarse paste using approx 1/2 cup of water
  3. transfer the batter into a deep bowl. cover with a lid and keep aside to ferment in a warm place for 4-5 hours.
  4. after fermentation add soda, salt and 2-3 tbsp of water. keep aside.
  5. heat oil in a pan. add mustard and asafoetida. add this tempering to the batter and mix well.
  6. mix cheese and chutney in a small bowl for stuffing.
  7. now heat an appe mould on medium flame and grease it using a little oil.
  8. pour 1 tsp of the batter into each appe mould.
  9. drop a tsp of stuffing and cover this stuffing by pouring again 1-2 tsp of the batter.
  10. cook using a little oil, till the lower surface becomes golden brown and then turn each appe upside down using a fork so as to cook them from the other side using a little oil.
  11. repeat with the remaining batter to make more appes
  12. serve immediately with coconut chutney
