About Pomphret masala Recipe

This is a typical bengali spicy fish curry made with pomphret fish in a tomato based gravy.

Pomphret masala

Ingredients to make Pomphret masala

  • Pomphret (cut into 3 pieces) - 1
  • onion (chopped) - 2
  • tomatoes (chopped) - 2
  • ginger garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • cumin powder - 1 tsp
  • turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • chilly powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/4 th tsp
  • bay leaf - 1
  • cloves - 2
  • cinnamon - 1
  • salt
  • sugar - 1/2 tsp
  • mustard oil

How to make Pomphret masala

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with salt, little turmeric powder for 10 minutes. Shallow fry them in pan with mustard oil. Keep aside.
  2. Now in the same pan, add some more oil, add bay leaf, cinnamon and cloves. Then add the chopped onion.
  3. Saute till golden brown and add the ginger garlic paste. Saute and then add the powdered masalas.
  4. Then add the tomatoes, salt and cook on a low flame, till it they are mushy.
  5. Then add the fried pomphret pieces and cook for few more minutes. Add little water if required.
  6. Add sugar, stir and check for the salt. Serve
