About Daineiiong (Dal curry with sesame seeds/ Black sesame rice and jadoh) Recipe

It's a North East dish, a part of the Garo-Khasi cuisine, the key ingredient being black sesame seeds.

Daineiiong (Dal curry with sesame seeds/ Black sesame rice and jadoh)

Ingredients to make Daineiiong (Dal curry with sesame seeds/ Black sesame rice and jadoh)

  • 1/2 cup tuvar dal
  • 2 tbsp black sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 green chillies
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder

How to make Daineiiong (Dal curry with sesame seeds/ Black sesame rice and jadoh)

  1. Pressure cook the dal.
  2. Once done open the lid and mash the dal. Keep it aside.
  3. Now dry roast the sesame seeds and make a paste of it with water in the mixer.
  4. Take a vessel, put in some oil or ghee and add the ginger paste, slit the green chillies and fry till the raw smell of ginger goes away. Then add the sesame paste and fry the masala.
  5. Next add the mashed dal and mix it well. Note to keep the dal a little thick.
  6. Remove and garnish with a little pure ghee and eat it with jadoh, another Khasi delicacy.

My Tip:

You could also use red lentil, khasi cuisine has less use of any type of masalas. We prefer using greens more, these recipes are what I have learned while staying in Shillong and from some North East blogs.
