The all-time favorite chutney!

Ingredients to make The all-time favorite chutney!

  • 2 Cups Grated coconut
  • 4-5 red chilies
  • 1 small tamarind, lemon sized ball (soaked in little water, just enough to dip it)
  • a pinch of turmeric
  • salt as per taste
  • For Seasoning:
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split gram dal)
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
  • 2 teaspoons of oil

How to make The all-time favorite chutney!

  1. Make small pieces of the red chilies and fry in a wok (kadhai) for a few minutes (approximately 1-2 minutes).
  2. Grind the broken red chilies in a mixer. Add grated coconut, salt, turmeric and few pieces (4-5) of soaked tamarind In my view this is the key to its tangy and unique taste).
  3. Grind to a coarse consistency, by intermittently, adding the water in which the tamarind was soaked.
  4. Remove this chutney from the jar into a bowl. For seasoning, heat oil, add urad dal and once they turn light brown, add mustard seeds and hing.
  5. Add seasoning to the chutney. And lo, your tangy and tasty chutney is ready to be savored!

My Tip:

While grinding the chutney, add some of the soaked tamarind pulp along with the water. Do not make the chutney too fine.
