Unnakai is a very popular north Malabar snack. it is very easy to make and nutritious.

Ingredients Serving: 6

  1. Ripe plantains (Nethra pazham) 4
  2. Grated coconut 1
  3. Sugar 1/2 cup
  4. Chopped cashew nuts 1/2 cup
  5. Raisins 1/4 cup
  6. Ghee 1 tablespoon
  7. Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Plantains should be riped and firm enough. cook the plantains with skin and once you have boiled it well. Peel it off and mash it with hand.
  2. In a pan heat ghee, add chopped cashews.When cashews turn light brown , add the raisins and coconut. Mix well.
  3. Finally, add sugar and mix well again.
  4. Now take small balls of mashed plantains.Just flatten a little and keep the ball inside ( mixture)
  5. Close it and roll it into oval shape.If it is very sticky you can grease your hands with ghee.
  6. Heat a thick bottomed kadai and deep fry this unnakais at medium heat till brown.Serve hot!!!
